Hertfordshire Archives & Local Studies is home to over three million documents giving a fascinating insight into life in the county since the 11th century. Our archives are complemented by the Local Studies Library, giving access to thousands of books, maps, newspapers and more. We also have several public access computers.

Document ordering: Most documents are available to order throughout the day, however some records are stored off site and can only be accessed twice a day.  Please telephone or visit the website for further details.  Please note document ordering times finish an hour before closing.

Opening hours:

  • Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday 9am – 5pm
  • Friday 9am - 12.30pm
  • Saturday 10am – 2pm (1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month)

On the first Tuesday of every month HALS is open until 7.30pm by appointment only. Contact HALS by 9am on the previous Friday to book.
