Museum Activities for the Countdown to Christmas!

ST ALBANS MUSEUMS

A Christmas Celebration - Saturday 2nd December, 11am – 3pm (last entry 2.40pm)

A festive family fun day!  Create a decoration for our Christmas tree and make your own festive baubles to take home.  Listen to some cosy Christmas stories and see if you can spot the stars in our gallery trail.

Free (£1.50 per child for the craft activity and museum entry charge applies to all non-residents).

Wreath making workshop - Saturday 2nd December, 10am – 12.30pm

As the nights draw in, come and decorate a wreath to bring festive cheer to your home. All materials are supplied.

Tots' Tales - Wednesday 13th December, 10.30am – 11.30am, 11.45am – 12.45pm and 1.30pm – 2.30pm

Join us for a story, craft activity and a museum hunt inspired by The Gruffalo’s Child by Julia Donaldson. Suitable for children aged 2 – 4 years, accompanied by an adult. An extra session has been added due to popular demand but please book in advance either in person at Verulamium Museum or by phone 01727 751810.

Crafts in the Collonade - Wednesday 20th December, 2pm – 4pm (last entry 3.40pm)

Simple festive crafts inspired by the museum’s collections.  All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Borrow items from our explorer kit to help you investigate the museum. What will you discover as you venture into Verulamium Museum?

ROYSTON MUSEUM

Willow Christmas Decorations  - Wednesday 6th December, 1030 to 12 noon

Simple techniques to make festive bits and pieces - choose from a range of Christmas weaves and plaits to make some hand crafted decorations. Suitable for beginners.

Part of the regional Traditional Hertfordshire Project. £5 per person

Discover how people in history celebrated winter with crafty activities and a trail around the museum. Part of the regional Traditional Hertfordshire Project.

Please note that Royston Museum closes to the public for Xmas & New Year on Thursday 21st December at 5pm (last admission 4.45pm), and re-opens on Wednesday 3rd January 2018 at 10am.

ELSTREE AND BOREHAMWOOD MUSEUM

Games Night - Tuesday 28th November – 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm

The museum is having a special evening opening for an old-fashioned games night on the second floor at 96 Shenley Road, Borehamwood, WD6 1EB.  Everyone is welcome to join the museum volunteers and play a selection of games.  You can also see the museum’s popular Toys Games and Gadgets exhibition which runs until 13th January.

POTTERS BAR MUSEUM

Also has a games theme to their current temporary exhibition on the History of Merit Toys.  Merit was a Potters Bar factory and brought us some classic childhood games.  They invite you to come along for a nostalgic trip through childhood in the exhibition which runs over the Christmas period.

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM AT TRING

Christmas Starfish - Thursday 30 November and 14 December 10.30-11.00

Audience: Under 5’s - Get messy with clay to create a starfish decoration.  In this led activity, under 5s play with clay to create a unique starfish to decorate their Christmas tree.

£2 per child.  Drop-in activity, no need to book in advance. 

Rudolph Christmas Trail - Saturday 2 December – Sunday 7 January (10.00-17.00 Mon-Sat and 14.00-17.00 Sunday)

Audience: Suitable for all ages. Follow Rudolph around the world as he delivers gifts and meets new animals.  Take a journey around the museum with Rudolph to explore his new friends. On your trip spot hidden reindeer and have a go at some games. Complete the trail and receive a chocolate treat!

Behind the Scenes:  Voyages of Discovery - Thursday 7 December 11.00-12.00 noon

Step behind the scenes to see the world-renowned bird collection including historic specimens linked to Darwin, Wallace and Shackleton.  Discover the different types of scientific collection, how they are prepared, conserved and used by researchers from around the world.

The tour is themed around the Voyages of Discovery. Get the rare chance to look at historical specimens and hear about the great lengths explorers took for science.  

Photo ID required, advance booking required.  Audience: Adults, £10 per ticket. 


Christmas Activities in Hertfordshire Museums 2016

There is a fantastic array of activities taking place in Museums in Hertfordshire this festive season.  Why not check out the list below to see how your local Museum is celebrating Christmas.

British Schools Museum, Hitchin

Victorian Christmas Fair at the British Schools Museum - Friday 2nd December, 4.30 – 7.30pm.

Experience a Victorian Christmas in the Headmaster's House decked out in traditional decorations, and join in with our wonderful carol singers. Then warm up with mulled wine, roast chestnuts and bacon rolls while browsing the craft stalls for a perfect Christmas gift. Free admission.

Christmas Fair at the British Schools Museum - Saturday 3rd December 10.00am – 2.00pm

Join us for craft stalls, games and raffles. Then refresh yourself with mulled wine and a bacon roll before experiencing a Victorian Christmas in the Headmaster's House. Free admission.

Elstree and Borehamwood Museum

Christmas at 96 - Saturday 3rd December 12.00pm – 3.30pm

Meet Santa All Day, Christmas Magic Party 12.00-1.30pm, Hertsmere Academy of Dance 1.40-2.10pm, Toddler Tales 2.30-3.00pm and Fixation Theatre 3.00-3.30pm.  There will also be crafts, Christmas biscuits and face painting throughout the day.

Hertford Museum

A Victorian Spectacle at Hertford Museum  - Thursday 22nd December 2.30-4.00pm.

Join us as we step back in time and explore Victorian Hertford at Christmas. Make traditional presents, play parlour games and more!  £4.50 per child, booking Essential (free spaces are available for children of low income families).   

Knebworth House

A Christmas Carol - Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th December 2016, 3.30pm & 7.30pm. 

A fireside reading of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, read by actor Jeremy Swift (Downton Abbey/The Durrells).  There will also be festive musical accompaniment. Guests will be offered a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie on arrival. Parking is in the Courtyard directly in front of the House.  There will be a 20 minute interval during which drinks may be purchased and guests will have an opportunity to wander through some of the rooms on the ground floor of the House.

Tickets for the evening performances are £27.50 and matinee tickets are £25.00 per person, booking is essential.

Lunch with Santa - 4th, 11th and 18th December, 12.30pm.

Give your family an early Christmas treat with a fantastic lunch at Knebworth Barns, complete with a visit from Santa and a gift for every child.  Arrival is from 12.00 midday and the Bar will be open for cash purchase drinks. Your two-course lunch will be served at 12.30 pm. Santa will arrive following dessert with a gift for every child. 

Adults: £25.00 per person.  Children aged up to 13 years of age £12.00, booking is essential.

Lowewood Museum

Annual Christmas Event - Saturday 3rd December, 11.00am – 4.00pm

Visit Father Christmas in his grotto, enjoy some tasty festive treats and have a go at our Christmas craft. No booking necessary. 

   

Royston & District Museum & Art Gallery

Crafty Kids: Merry Christmas - Saturday 10th December, 10.30 – 12.00pm.  

Christmas themes activities for kids, £3 per child and no booking necessary. 

Stevenage Museum

New Town Christmas - Saturday 10th December,  11.00am – 4.00pm

Visit Santa (£5), make retro Christmas decorations and visit the craft fair.

Verulamium Museum, St Albans

Cracking Christmas Crafts - Saturday 3rd December 10.30 – 12.30pm & 1.30 – 4.00pm.

A day of festive crafty fun for all the family, where you can create decorations and make your own personalised Christmas card.  £3.00. 

Tots Tales - Wednesday 14th December, 10.30 – 11.30am and 1.30 – 2.30pm.

Christmas themed story and craft activity. Suitable for children aged 2 – 4 years, accompanied by an adult. £2.00.

Celebrating Saturnalia - Monday 19th – Friday 23rd December, 2.00 – 4.00pm.

Help us to celebrate the Roman festival of Saturnaliam and decorate the museum’s Christmas tree! Suitable for 3+ year olds, accompanied by an adult. £1.50. 

12 Days of Christmas - Wednesday 28th  – Friday 30th December, 10.00am – 5.00pm.

“On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…” Explore the museum with a very special Roman themed ‘12 days of Christmas’ trail. Free.

Watford Museum

Festive Family Fun at Watford Museum - Saturday 3rd December, 11.00am – 4.00pm.

Lots of drop-in craft, storytelling, face painting and even a special appearance by Father Christmas!  £3 per child. Suitable for all ages.

The Museum Explorer Passport is launching on the 28th of May!

Child holding Museum Explorer PassportThis summer, take a family journey through the rich and exciting history of Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex with a free Museum Explorer Passport. Collect yours from a participating local museum and begin your expedition through time, taking in the Roman invasion, the magic of steam railways and the rapid rise of the industrial age. Museums throughout the three counties are running holiday events, activities and trails for families. Go along and get your passport stamped at each museum you visit and take part in our challenges. Your child will get a stamp for each challenge they complete and they will receive a special sticker for completing their challenges.

The passport has been created in partnership with museums across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Essex with the aim of encouraging families to visit museums. It aims to show families how many great museums there are on their doorstep, providing a range of fantastic, affordable activities during the holidays.

39 museums from the 3 counties are participating including 12 from Hertfordshire:

  • Much Hadham Forge Museum
  • The Natural History Museum at Tring
  • Royston and District Museum & Art Gallery
  • Stevenage Museum
  • Watford Museum

You can pick up a passport anytime from the end of May and the explorer scheme will run throughout the summer.
